The Cockpit

Music: Lindertje Mans and Roald van Oosten

Words: Lindertje Mans

What does a fish think about the future of humanity?

A one-woman-electro-opera on Earth, nature, loneliness and connection.

The Gaia Hypothesis is a guided meditation, a theatrical fantasy, a philosophical experiment and a deeply personal essay all at once. Lindertje Mans transforms into a deep-sea fish, a space shuttle and a human cell in an attempt to feel connected to the whole system.

These three characters share their visions on humanity, told through compelling synthpop songs. A tantalising onewoman electro-opera with seductive songs, mesmerising costumes and unexpected transformations. A musical, visual and emotional spectacle. A search for a new relationship between humankind and its surroundings.

The Gaia Hypothesis was formulated in 1969 by James Lovelock and Lynn Margulis. It imagines the earth as a self-regulating system, in which all life and matter are inextricably connected. If we are all part of the same system, maybe we should ask other parts of this system what to do?

“a tantalizing posthumanistic pop-opera (…) a sensual musical trip (…) an experience that stimulates the senses, that stands midway between a concept album and an asmr-session” ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – NRC

“Lindertje Mans created her own sub-genre in theatre, a one woman electro-opera (…)The pumping songs are reminiscent of synthpop from the beginning of this century. Think of: Goldfrapp (also because of Mans’s voice) and the gloomy disco stompers of Depeche Mode.” ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – Volkskrant

The music was elected “Best composition for theatre in 2022” by Dutch theatre critic Marijn Lems.
