Genesis
Yellow grew out of a piece that was performed as part of Tête à Tête: The Opera Festival 2010, and has been a continuously developing project. The initial work, ‘She Walketh Veiled and Sleeping’ was based on Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s ‘The Yellow Wallpaper,’ and that underlying idea has remained. This, I hope, is the first of many upcoming projects that aim to newly understand the operatic form, and the expressive and dramatic power of music in the theatre. Daniel Saleeb
Synopsis
Yellow fuses opera with theatre and performance art and embraces quadrophic sound, live video and an immersive design to re-examine the audience’s relationship with opera. Together with a haunting chamber ensemble score, this is an operatic experience like no other.
Taking inspiration from Charlotte Gilman’s seminal short story ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’, the three short works explore madness and mental strain through a surreal tapestry of dirty limericks and marital psychosis.
