Bread and Circuses is set in the world of professional wrestling, exploring a sub-culture and popular spectacle which helped shape the Trump presidency. The opera looks back at the imagined history behind Trump’s real world 2007 appearance on a televised wrestling event. It is a family saga of operatic proportions, complete with betrayal, murder, and revenge, and explores how Kayfabe – the portrayal of staged events within the industry of professional wrestling as “real” – might have defined an era. It isn’t about what is true, it’s about what you want to believe.
